Napster for Windows: Manual

Hot List

  • Adding users to your Hot List
  • Interacting with users through the Hot List

The Hot List lets you quickly locate your favorite Napster users and browse their shared files.

Adding users to your Hot List

Napster lets you add users to your Hot List from just about anywhere in the application. Here are three ways to put a user on your Hot List:

    1. Right-click menu: Right-click a user name anywhere in Napster, and choose "Add to Hot List."
    2. Actions menu: Pull down the Actions menu in the Napster menu bar, choose "Add User to Hot List," type the user name, and click "OK."
    3. Instant Message window: Whenever you receive or send an Instant Message, you have the option to add the user with whom you're Instant Messaging to your Hot List.

Interacting with users through the Hot List

To get to the Hot List area, click the Hot List button in the Napster navigation bar. If you've put anyone on your Hot List, you'll see those users listed on the left.

    2 Connection speed indicator
This colored dot gives the user's reported connection speed.

Green: Cable modem and above (DSL, T1, T3)
    Yellow: 56k modem to ISDN-128k
Red: 33.6k and below (and "unknown" speed)

    3 Offline user
Users listed in this window are not currently connected to the Napster Community.

    Online users

To interact with a user who's on your Hot List and online, right-click that user name to bring up a menu. Here's an explanation of the right-click menu options:

    Instant Message
Send this user an Instant Message.

    View User Information
View some basic information about this user. Here's an explanation of the information Napster lets you see:

    • Status: Whether the user is currently online or offline. If the user is offline, you'll get less information.
    • Time Connected: How long the user has been connected to the Napster Community, in hours and minutes.
    • User: This person's user name.
    • Client Version: The version of the Napster software this user has.
    • User Level: The user's classification level. Everyone except Napster administrators is classified as a "user."
    • Channels: Any chat channels this user currently has open.
    • Ability: The user's current ability to share files. "Active" means you'll be able to transfer files with this user.
    • Number Shared: The number of files this user is currently sharing with the Napster Community.
    • Current Transfers: How many inbound and outbound transfers the user is currently conducting. This number doesn't show how many transfers this user has queued.
    Browse Files
    View this user's shared files.

    Remove User
Remove this user from your Hot List.

    Offline users

When users are offline, there are only two ways to interact with them. Right-click a user name to see these menu options:

    Remove User
Remove this user from your Hot List.

    View User Information
You can get only a few pieces of information about an offline user. If the user is online, you'll get more information.
